1-0 loss in Sunday preseason friendly at Stade Velodrome

Positive showing in Marseille matchup

VCF faced their biggest test of the preseason to date on Sunday night, beginning the month of August with a game against Olympique Marseille. They were up against a well-rehearsed rival, as the French side start their European campaign next week. Valencia did not appear overwhelmed, however, and in the first half it was only a lack of killer instinct in front of goal that denied the visitors an advantage.

Unai Emery had lined up a side that were extremely solid at the back, with César once again splendid between the sticks. A three-man midfield attack linked up play with a front three made up of Pablo, Aduriz and Feighouli. The former was sensational in tandem with Tino Costa, something that gives much cause for optimism to VCF fans ahead of the upcoming season. The well-oiled Valencia machine soaked up the pressure provided by the home side, as Olympique only managed to score once -in the second half courtesy of Ben Arfa, following a string of substitutions.

The starting eleven was completely different to that of Saturday's match against Hannover 96, although top players were present throughout the game. Mathieu nearly scored his second goal of the preseason on ten minutes, as part of a set piece. Pablo and Ever Banega were the standout players.

The 4-3-3 formation used by Emery in preseason continued to show promise, with chances for the attacking trio before the clock reached 20 minutes. The only response from the French side was a 29th minute header by N'Diaye.

Familiar with his marker, Pablo gave ex-Osasuna player Azpilicueta a torrid time down the wing. That was the story of the first half, although things changed after the break following the customary multiple substitutions. Five changes were made at half time by Marseille, providing a renewed vigour for attack. Fresh legs provided a problem for Valencia, tired from a hard preseason. They almost held on until the final whistle, with Ricardo Costa making a notable debut, until Ben Arfa scored the only goal of the game with thirteen minutes left to play.
