AS Roma, runners-up in Italy’s Serie A last season, will be Valencia CF’s opponent in the 44th edition of the Trofeo Naranja Estrella Damm. The annual trophy game is to be played on August 8th at Mestalla from 21:30 hours. The Trofeo Naranja Estrella Damm is a big preseason event for the club and the most prestigious of its kind in Spain.
Executive President Amadeo Salvo stated: “The Trofeo Naranja Estrella Damm has become one of the games that generates the most enthusiasm amongst fans. We are celebrating the 44th edition of a classic summer event, which also serves to give exposure to one of our major collaborators, Estrella Damm." Match tickets will go on sale online on July XX through valenciacf.com.
AS Roma Executive Director, Italo Zanzi, also wanted to stress the prestige involved in visiting Mestalla again: "It is an honour to compete in the Trofeo Naranja Estrella Damm. Valencia CF have a great history and we hope to have an attractive and competitive match."
The team from the Italian capital have established themselves as a great rival to Juventus in recent seasons. Rudy Garcia’s side have had two brilliant seasons, in which they have placed second in Serie A, and feature top-level players like the legendary Totti and De Rossi, former Valencia CF midfielder Seydou Keita and international stars Maicon, Ashley Cole, Nainggolan and Pjanic. AS Roma are a Champions League team fit for the occasion of a great night of European football at Mestalla.
This will be the third time AS Roma have played the Trofeo Naranja. In the previous two meetings, VCF won 2-0 (in 2006) and 3-0 (in 2011), respectively. The match on August 8th will be the twelfth time that the teams meet; the first was in 1963-64 Fairs Cup, with a 3-0 home win at Mestalla. In the return leg VCF lost 1-0 VCF but went through to the next round. In 1990/91, Valencia CF played against the Giallorossi in the second round of the UEFA Cup, drawing the first leg at Mestalla and winning 2-1 in the Stadio Olimpico.
In the group stage of the UEFA Champions League in 2002/03, both clubs won their respective away games, 0-3 to AS Roma at Mestalla and 0-1 to Valencia CF in Rome, with a goal from John Carew. The teams faced off again in the continental showpiece in the 2006/07 group stage: VCF won 2-1 at Mestalla and lost 1-0 in Italy, with a large number of youth team players.
Besides the Trofeo Naranja precedents, a third friendly has been played between Valencia CF and AS Roma. It took place in 1994/95 at the Stadio Olimpico, with a final score of 1-0.
