Ricardo Arias Penella is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the history of the Club. Remembered as the ‘Spanish Beckenbauer’, he stood out for his world-class style and  is one of the the players with the highest number of appearances in a Valencia CF shirt

Arias played with the first squad during 16 seasons and lived the glory of the three titles won in the seventies. He also played an vital part in the return of the team to the first division in the 1986/87 season.

His style of play was elegant but courageous when the circumstances of the game required it. No doubt he was a highly-skilled player who worked hard and earned a spot in the starting lineup since his arrival. His contribution to winning three titles in a row - Copa del Rey, Recopa and European supercup - was crucial, being even named captain of the team in his late years.

Also did the same in the difficult moments, being one of the major players to achieve the ascent the 1986/87 season, when he played 34 games , and their participation was more than regular till he park his career in our team to go to play for Castellón, in the year 1991/92 . Ricardo will be always remembered as the ' Beckenbauer ' Spanish, free of supreme category, who could play with defenses like Tendillo , Botubot , Giner, Voro and Camarasa, where he stood out for his supreme style to play football in an area not given to a style so refined.
