Carlos Marchena López (Las Cabezas de San Juan, Sevilla, 31/07/1979) is one of those players that has been sorrounded by success all his career.
He grew up as a footballer at Sevilla FC football academy and joined Valencia CF from Benfica in the 2001/02 season.
Marchena left his footprint at Valencia CF already in his first year at the club, leading the team to la Liga win. He was a skilled, strong and insurmountable defender. His arrival coincided in time with that of a generation of players that reached the glory at VCF, with a four title-win: the League , the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Cup, the European Cup Winners’ Cup. He was named in the best world XI in 2004. Thanks to his style of play he was widely regarded as one of Europe’s top full-backs and his talent was recognised both nationally and internationally.
Marchena was acknowledged and respected in the changing room, becoming the team’s captain. His strong capacity to excell both on an individual and group level led him to occupy several positions in the field. He is guaranteed a place in Valencia CF’s greatest-signings list.
Marchena earned several call-ups for the Spain senior squad, where he played with one of the best generations that the Spanish football has ever seen. He made 61 appearances, won a silver medal in Sidney 2000 and the Euro Cup in 2008.
