Gaizka Mendieta

VCF internationals

Mendieta emerged as one of the top midfielders in the world, and one of the great players in Valencia CF history

Gaizka Mendieta was born in Lekeitio (Bilbao). His father, André Mendieta, played as a goalkeeper for CD Castellon, and it was he who instilled a love of football in the future VCF legend. The younger Mendieta trained in the Castellon academy, attracting the interest of Valencia CF –to whom he moved for the 1992-1993 season. With his authority on and off the pitch, he was the epitome of a Valencia CF side that that gradually grew to win the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercopa.

Individually, Mendieta emerged as one of the top midfielders in the world, and one of the great players in Valencia CF history. The Spaniard was a key part of the team that reached consecutive finals in the UEFA Champions League against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in 2000 and 2001, respectively.

Mendieta left the club in 2001, joining Lazio for a transfer fee that made him the most expensive Spanish player in history at that time. He was loaned out to Barcelona that same year and moved to Middlesbrough at the end of the season, with whom he would win the English League Cup in 2004.

Teams: CD Castellón, SS Lazio, FC Barcelona, Middlesbrough
