Born in 1985 in Vilamarxant (Valencia), Raul Albiol played for Ribarroja CF’s youth team until he joined Valencia CF in the 1997-98 season -also being called up for the Spanish Under-19s. He debuted for the first team in the 2000 preseason. His first official appearance would not occur until the 2003-04 season, in a UEFA Cup match against AIK Solna. At the time he was still part of the VCF Mestalla squad.
He was loaned to Getafe in the 2004-05 season, in order to gain experience in the top flight. On the way to Madrid he suffered a serious car accident, meaning he had to wait four months to make a full recovery and feature for the club.
For the 2005-06 season, Albiol returned to Valencia CF. He had a difficult start but became a revelation on his way to playing 29 games in La Liga as a starter.
Besides being an Under-19 and Under-21 international, he was called up for the Spanish senior side for the first time in 2007 –in a qualifying match for the Euro 2008 competition that he would later win with Spain. He also participated in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and at Euro 2012.
