Spain holiday led David to become dedicated Valencia CF fan

Among the volunteers helping out with the organisation of the Valencia CF trip to Singapore is David Chng who has been a dedicated fan ever since he visited Mestalla in 2014 as part of a holiday in Spain.

Football is a growing sport in Singapore and despite the strong competition from Premier League clubs and other La Liga side, Valencia has a small but committed following.

David first interest in Valencia came surprisingly as a result of computer games where he became a big fan of Pablo Aimar.

“When I was young I used PlayStation a lot and one of my favourite players was Pablo Aimar. I used to pick him as I liked the way he played,” said David.

“Then in 2014, I went to Spain on a month’s holiday and visited Valencia and I liked it a lot. I went on the Mestalla tour and it really made me feel that this was the team for me.

“Aimar was my favourite player to begin with and since then there have been lots of other players that I have liked such as David Silva and David Villa.

“I didn’t have the chance to see a Valencia game when I was there the first time but I will go back at the end of the year and hopefully I will see one then.”

The match times in Europe make it difficult to watch some of the games in LaLiga but David along with other Valencia fans find ways to see as many as possible.

“All the games are shown on satellite and we as a fans’ group have events every now and again where we all meet up. Otherwise I watch games for example in a restaurant,” he said.

“It has not been a good season for us but we have a young squad and I am sure that we will bounce back.”

Valencia CF have a promotional tour of Singapore and Malaysia from the 18th to 22nd of May which will involve institutional, charitable and commercial events.

They arrive at Singapore’s Changi Airport at 6.50am on Wednesday and David will be among other volunteers organising the reception with fans expecting to gather.

He will also help out at other events including one on Sunday in collaboration with UN Women at Chijmes.

“I am happy to be involved and helping out,” he said. “It was a hobby for me and then I got to speak to people at the club and it is great to be doing all this.”
