Valencia CF slip up away to Athletic

September, 18 2016 -

Valencia CF slipped up away to Athletic Bilbao losing 2-1 after they were unable to hold onto an early lead through Álvaro Medran.

Medran slotted the ball home from close range with just two minutes gone but while they battled hard, Athletic were able to turn the game around.

Aritz Aduriz headed home from a corner after 24 minutes and then got the winner before half time.

Valencia coach Pako Ayestarán was missing Enzo Pérez through suspension and the injured Ezequiel Garay. It meant that Aderllan Santos came into the defence alongside Eliaquim Mangala and Álvaro Medrán started in midfield.

The blanquinegros have rued their luck in the opening matches of the season where they have played some neat attacking football but with little reward.

However, they started on the right foot against Athletic as they scored right away on a counter-attack. Nani was sharper than the Athletic rearguard, picking up the ball on the right of the area and squaring for Medrán to score.

Athletic came into the game looking to bounce back from defeat in the Europa League against Sassuolo last Thursday and coach Ernesto Valverde made several changes to keep the team fresh.

Valencia looked comfortable on the ball early on but gradually Athletic came more into the game and Susaeta went close to scoring with a volley after 17 minutes before the equaliser came.

Aduriz jumped well and powered home a header from a Beñat corner.

It was a game where there were plenty of stoppages and both sides were struggling to impose their rhythm.

Athletic were a threat with their physical presence while Valencia showed moments of skill and link-up play that included a Rodrigo Moreno volley over the crossbar after 35 minutes.

Aduriz’s second where he flicked the ball over Alves, after a long ball down field from Beñat, was a big blow for the visitors before the break.

Nani and Munir El Haddadi had shots wide at the start of the second half but they were also opened up at the back with Raul García having a shot blocked by Martín Montoya and another volley saved by Alves.

Nani did well on the right and crossed for Rodrigo whose close range effort was smothered by keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga while at the other end Aduriz fired wide in front of goal.

Ayestarán brought on Santi Mina and Joao Cancelo for the final third of the game but despite showing plenty of urgency they were unable to find a way back.
