Valencia CF triumph at Leganés thanks to Nani and Suárez goals

Septiembre, 25 2016 -

VCF beat Leganés 1-2 away from home to take second win in four days.

Valencia CF emerged victorious from a meeting with CD Leganés on Matchday 6 of the La Liga season, thanks to goals from Nani and Mario Suárez. The team were making the trip to Butarque for a Primera División fixture for the first time,  buoyed by their opening win of the campaign in midweek at the expense of Deportivo Alavés and still under the guidance of inspirational interim coach Salvador González -'Voro'.

However, it would be home side who opened the scoring, 21 minutes into the game. Szymanowski -whose sister bagged a brace for VCF Femenino on Saturday against Fundación Albacete- met a ball at the back post and beat Diego Alves to give Leganés the lead.

The play was relatively slow and the chances sporadic, but Valencia CF had an opportunity to draw back level through Rodrigo just a few minutes after the Leganés goal. Montoya put in a dangerous cross for Nani, who flicked the ball on just out of reach of his teammate.

The equaliser eventually arrived on 34 minutes, with Nani getting his first official goal in a Valencia CF shirt. A backpass to Leganés goalkeeper Serantes was intercepted by Rodrigo, leaving the ball loose and the stopper stranded off his line. Nani took control and placed the ball deftly into the net, making it 1-1. The home fans and players appealed for a foul in the build up, but the goal would stand.

The second half saw VCF start off dominating play, and they would be rewarded for their persistance as they took the lead for the first time. On the opening corner of the half, Nani swung in a ball that fell to the foot of Mario Suárez, who put his side 1-2 up, 52 minutes into the game.

Leganés looked for a replica of their opening goal in response. Another ball in to Szymanowski was met by the Argentine's head, but on this occasion he would send it over the crossbar. Soon after, Szymanowski would have another chance to score -this time from the penalty spot as Diego Alves committed a foul in the area.

Fortunately for Valencia CF, Alves has proven to be one of the top penalty stoppers in world football, and he added another name to his list of victims by guessing the right way once more. The Brazilian upped his record to incredible seventeen spot kicks saved since his arrival in La Liga, and kept his team in front.

The penalty save spurred VCF on, and from then on they were the more likely side to score. Dani Parejo forced a save from Serantes and José Luis Gayà hit a shot wide, as the visitors upped the pressure to try and seal the win. Although Leganés would provide a scare through Luciano's header that grazed the right post, there was no change to the scoreline and Valencia CF would add a second win to their tally for 2016/17.
