Valencia go down 2-1 away to Celta

November, 06 2016 -

Valencia CF were unable to hold onto a lead given by a Dani Parejo penalty as they went down 2-1 away to Celta Vigo on Sunday.

Rodrigo Moreno was brought down in the box just after half an hour of play and Parejo sent the keeper Rubén the wrong way with his penalty kick.

Valencia were on top but Facundo Roncaglia equalised with a fine finish and from there on the visitors continued to dictate the play albeit without a finishing touch.

They had several chances to score but in the end it was John Guidetti header that decided the game.

Valencia faced a Celta side that has been dangerous in front of goal with Iago Aspas in strong form but they were also fragile defensively. The Galician side squandered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 away to Las Palmas last weekend and then were beaten 3-2 away to Ajax in the Europa League.

The only changes to Cesare Prandelli’s side from that which drew away to Deportivo la Coruña last weekend was Fede Cartabia starting on the right wing and Joao Cancelo at right-back and Medrán coming in for the suspended Enzo Pérez.

Nani had an early header from a Rodrigo cross that went straight to the keeper Rubén but after that the game became a cagey affair in midfield. Valencia kept their shape well with Medrán and Mario Suárez solid in front of the backline.

The opener came with Medrán sending a searching pass from the right wing and Rodrigo was tugged back by David Costas for a penalty. Parejo steeped up and tucked the ball away well into the corner.

It gave the Valencia players a lift and they took charge of the game with their rivals on the back foot and apparently lacking ideas.

However, against the run of play Celta grabbed an equaliser. Roncaglia came inside, in the area, and put the ball into the corner beyond the dive of Diego Alves.

Before half time Valencia came again at Celta with Rodrigo’s cross from the left cleared by Costas to Nani, and the Portuguese’s shot was saved by the keeper.

After the break Valencia pressed again with Medrán heading over and then a Parejo shot was blocked on the line by Fontás.

Nani then hit a defence splitting pass for Rodrigo but he shot wide on his weaker right foot.

The chances continued to fall for the blanquinegros with Nani having a strong strike from distance tipped over by Rúben for a corner and then cracked a volley wide from a deep Cancelo cross.

But it was Celta that scored again. Guidetti had a shot saved by the feet of Alves and following the subsequent corner, Guidetti headed home.
