Valencia CF return from international break with win against Deportivo La Coruña

April, 02 2017 -

Valencia CF came back with a bang at Mestalla on Matchday 29 of the LaLiga Santander season, returning from the international break with a 3-0 victory against Deportivo La Coruña. Goals from Ezequiel Garay and Joao Cancelo, plus an own goal from the visitors' Raul Albentosa and Diego Alves' latest penalty save, gave VCF an important three points.

An intense start saw both Fabian Orellana and Simone Zaza come close to opening the scoring just three minutes in. On both occasions, their efforts were kept out by Deportivo goalkeeper German Lux.

At the other end, the Galician side had the best chance to go ahead when Martin Montoya and Florin Andone tangled in the box. The referee awarded a penalty for Deportivo La Coruña, with Fayçal Fajr stepping up to take the spot kick against stopper-extraordinaire Diego Alves.

Alves added the Morrocan's name to his list of victims, guessing the right way to block his penalty and delight Mestalla.

The save proved to be vital, as almost immediately after it was Valencia CF who found the net. A header from Munir El-Haddadi against the crossbar was met by Ezequiel Garay, who volleyed home to make it 1-0.

That advantage was doubled just before the half-hour mark, as a Dani Parejo corner was met by Deportivo defender Raul Albentosa. His attempted clearance was headed into his own net, and VCF went 2-0 up -a score that remained the same going into half time.

The second half saw Alves make saves from Emre Çolak and Joselu shortly after the restart. At the other end, Aymen Abdennour had the ball in the net for Valencia CF, although his goal was unfairly ruled out for offside when it had been played to him.

As the game became scrappy, the intensity remained in place. Valencia CF waited for their moment to get a definitive goal, and nearly found it through Orellana when he almost met Carlos Soler's probing pass.

Deportivo's response was a sprint forward from Andone, read well by Alves to dive at his feet and prevent the Romanin from pulling the trigger on a shot.
Cancelo capped off the scoring in the final seconds of the game, with an unstoppable left footed strike past Lux, to take the final score to 3-0.

The win against a direct rival allows VCF to continue moving up the table, and now they set their sights on another victory in Thursday's game against Celta Vigo.
