A work of art from Gayà gives Valencia CF the win against RCD Espanyol (0-1)

Mayo, 13 2017 -

Valencia CF left the RCDE Stadium with all three points after winning 0-1, thanks to a work of art from the international full-back José Luis Gayà. It was the VCF Academy graduate’s first goal of the season, in a hard-fought match where the blanquinegros proved the importance of taking chances against a team who were unable to make the most of several of their own.

With just two games left to play and with Marcelino García Toral now confirmed as Valencia CF’s new coach, VCF had to deal with a strong start by the home side, who had a great chance to grab the first goal when Jurado came close to beating Jaume Doménech at the back post. The blanquinegros survived the early onslaught and started to grow into the game, with Nani trying his luck from outside the box. The Portuguese international picked up a back-heel from Rodrigo and lashed a powerful shot towards the blanquiazul goal, but Diego López was well positioned to make the save.

Voro went with the 4-2-3-1 formation that has served him so well since he took charge of the team when they were at the wrong end of the table. This time Voro chose to go with Medrán as his holding midfielder, alongside Parejo who was given the deep-lying playmaker role. Ahead of them Orellana, Nani and Rodrigo were charged with the task of creating chances for Zaza, the lone striker up top. It was Nani who had the first good chance to put Valencia CF ahead with a header, but his effort went just wide of the post. As VCF began to take control of the game, Espanyol hit them on the break and Gerard Moreno found himself one on one with Doménch, who made himself big and thwarted the striker’s attempt on goal.

The best chance of the half fell to Marc Navarro, who was gifted a free header but was unable to beat the Valencianista goalkeeper. After a corner was initially cleared, a second cross came in and the unmarked defender only need to hit the target; Jaume was relieved to watch his header sail over the bar.

Espanyol took control of possession in the final minutes of the first half, but the game remained goalless at the break.

VCF came back out for the second half with Santos on for Garay who was taken off due to a knock. Zaza had a chance to open the scoring early on in the half but he blazed over. The Italian was increasingly involved in the game and had another opportunity on the hour mark, but he fired wide of goal.

The game went through a scrappy period, with neither team able to create openings of note, until Parejo managed to find Gayà with a perfectly weighted through-ball. Gayà used a directional control to turn his marker and drilled his shot past Diego López, who could only admire the Valencianista’s work of art. The goal was Valencia CF’s first shot on target; proof that goals that win games.

In the remaining minutes Espanyol huffed and puffed, and Valencia CF did their best to close the game out. Right at the end, Parejo tried his luck from distance, and Nani came close to making it 0-2 in injury time. In the end VCF took the three points, their second win on the spin, thanks to Gayà’s moment of magic and the hard work put in by the team.
