Valencia CF are defeated in their final game of the season (1-3) May, 21 2017 - Voro received a standing ovation before kick-off Valencia CF were defeated in the final LaLiga game of the season at Mestalla against Villarreal CF. The yellows went ahead in the first minute through a Soldado goal, although VCF equalised with a great header from Nani. Trigueros scored the second and Sansone put the game to bed near the end. The minutes before kick-off were emotional. First of all there was an ovation for Voro, who was ending his fifth stint as Valencia CF coach. Mestalla thanked the Valencianista coach for his commitment to the badge and for managing the complicated situation he had inherited when he took over. After that came a minute’s silence in memory of Jesús Barrachina, former Valencia CF vice-president and board member. With the ball in play, VCF were looking to sign off with a win, but things were made more complicated when they conceded in the first minute. Soldado made the most of a mistake and scored the first goal of the game. Valencia CF didn’t let their heads drop, and slowly gained control of possession. Two Nani headers from corners gave Villarreal something to think about. VCF continued to knock on the door, forcing great saves from Andrés Fernández, first of all saving from Parejo, who struck a thunderous shot on target, and then preventing Gayà from adding to last week’s goal after a marvellous ball from Nani. Valencia CF were in complete control and although they went in at half-time trailing, they had deserved to be on level terms. The second half began with Villarreal seeing more of the ball, looking for a second goal against a VCF side who took some time to get back into their stride. But then Valencia CF’s prize arrived, a great move that was finished off by Nani after an inch-perfect cross from Rodrigo. However, the joy was short-lived because Trigueros put Villarreal back in the lead just minutes later. Voro brought Munir on for Montoya in an effort to try to get back in the game for a second time, and Zaza almost got the equaliser, but the Villarreal ‘keeper made another great save. Voro brought on Santi Mina for Rodrigo and Bakkali for Nani, and although the blanquinegros tried until the very end, they were unable to finish off the season with points as Sansone scored the third right at the end.
