Valencia Mestalla go top of the table with Alcoyano draw October, 01 2016 - Curro Torres' side take advantage of Barça B's defeat by Cornella Valencia Mestalla picked up a hard-earned 1-1 home draw against CD Alcoyano to go top of the table on Saturday. Curro Torres’ side faced a well-organised team tactically that gave away little space in which to play and while they defended deeply they scored with their only shot on target during the game. Still, the draw was enough for Mestalla to go top of Segunda B, group III, alongside Barça B who lost at home to Cornellà. It was a tough task for Mestalla who faced a side that has started the championship well and they were missing the suspended Gregori and Javi Jiménez along with the injured Sito and Caballo. Mestalla though rose to the challenge in a hotly contested game played at a high tempo and had more emotion than quality. While Alcoyano took few risks it was down to Mestalla to build play and while they were largely in control they lacked precision in attack. It was the home side that had to come from behind though with Gato beating goalkeeper Sivera and showed their efficiency in front of goal. Mestalla’s performances has seen them grow in confidence and they immediately set about getting back on equal terms which they did with Nacho Gil knocking the ball home. It was a similar story after the break with the game largely squeezed into midfield and Torres brought on Gonzalo Villar after the hour mark to try and give more width to their play. Aridai had a dangerous shot from outside the area after 72 minutes which was securely dealt with by goalkeeper Marc Martínez but it was still the only shot in either area during the second half and so Fran Villalba was also introduced as Mestalla sought the win. They pushed forward, with new first team coach Cesare Prandelli looking on, but they were unable to break down an Alcoyano side happy to take a point.
