VCF Mestalla get back on track against UE Cornellà (1-2) October, 23 2016 - VCF Mestalla got back to winning ways on Matchday 10 of the Segunda División B, Grupo III, beating UE Cornella 1-2 away from home at the Nou Municipal. Coach Curro Torres made changes to both his starting XI and formation for the game, lining up a 3-man defence of Javi Jiménez, Charlie and debutant Zotko in order to give an extra man in the opposition half. Striker Aridai returned from suspension, and enjoyed several early chances after breaking through the UE Cornella back line. The reward for VCF Mestalla’s dominance came with the opening goal from Quim Araujo, who hit a powerful left footed shot that goalkeeper Marcos coulf not keep out. After 22 minutes of play the visitors were 0-1 up, and they could have doubled the lead just before the break –Aridai sending an effort only just over the crossbar. The second half began with the same control of the game by VCF Mestalla, who switched to four at the back with Marc Ferris coming on for Zotko. However, UE Cornella found an equaliser just 10 minutes into the second period, off a Ñoño free kick. Valencia CF’s Antonio Sivera got a fingertip to the ball, but could not keep it out. The VCF Mestalla goalkeeper did prevent the opposition from going ahead a few minutes later, parrying away a close-range shot from Enric inside the box. Pushing forward in search of a winner, VCF Mestalla got their reward through Rafa Mir. The striker was played through by Carlos Soler, and handled the one-on-one with the goalkeeper perfectly to provide the finish and take the score to 1-2. Having put another victory on the board, VCF Mestalla will look to keep up their momentum next Saturday, when they play Gavà at the Antonio Puchades at 5pm.
