Controversial late equaliser denies VCF Mestalla victory against CE Sabadell (2-2)

Noviembre, 05 2016 -

A controversial late equaliser meant that VCF Mestalla had to settle for a point in their game against CE Sabadell, conceding in stoppage time with the final score 2-2. The team had previously taken a two-goal lead and looked to be on course for another victory.

The first attempt on goal was a spectacular one, as Aridai attemped an 'Olympic goal' from a corner that clipped crossbar and only just avoided going into the net. Both Aridai and strike partner Rafa Mir had close chances in the early going, but it was Quim who would find the net first for VCF Mestalla. A spectacular backheel put the ball past the opposition goalkeeper for the opening strike of the game, just past the quearter-hour mark.

With VCF Mestalla dominating the play, only their lack of efficient finishing prevented them from adding to their advantage before the break. Aridai, in particular, had several chances to increase the lead.

Curro Torres' side would get their richly deserved second goal on 35 minutes, through Fran Villalba. The midfielder, who had been calling for more minutes with the Valencia CF second team and is a fan favourite, met Nacho Gil's cross at the back post and converted well.

Sabadell reacted before the break, on both occasions through Álvaro. First he hit the crossbar, and then, on 39 minutes, made the most of confusion in the VCF Mestalla area to turn the ball home and make it 2-1.

Upon the restart, CE Sabadell enjoyed several chances. Ian mishit a shot, followed by the visitors receiving a golden opportunity when they were awarded a penalty. Gregorio was sent off for a second bookable offence as he conceded the spot kick, leaving VCF Mestalla down to ten men.

Faced with the penalty, it was the moment for goalkeeper Antonio Sivera to shine, and that he did with a superb double stop. It would not be his only intervention, as he continued to parry away any ball that came his way, and VCF Mestalla looked to be on course for the victory when the game passed the 90 minute mark.

In a cruel twist of fate, doubly painful after the controversy in midweek against FC Barcelona B, VCF Mestalla conceded in stoppage time to a Txomin goal, with an extra two minutes having been added on by the referee. It meant that the points were shared at the Estadio Antonio Puchades.
