VCF Mestalla miss out in close contest against Badalona

Diciembre, 04 2016 -

A close fought game on Matchday 17 of the season saw VCF Mestalla lose 2-0 against Badalona away from home. A goal from Iván Agudo early in the first half put the Valencia CF second team behind, with Oliva sealing the win for the hosts late on.

The antepenultimate game to be held at the Montigalà stadium saw Badalona doing most of the early pressing. It was through their pressure that they got the opening goal, as they won the ball back just outside the area and Agudo put the ball past VCF Mestalla goalkeeper Antonio Sivera on 16 minutes. Prior to the goal to make it 1-0, Nacho Vidal had hit the crossbar with a ball swung in from the wing.

Ten minutes after VCF Mestalla had gone behind, Vidal had an opportunity to equalise. Morales kept the ball out with his foot, and Eugeni’s two subsequent shots didn’t find their way into the net. Jordi Sánchez later had a goal ruled out for offside, and Toni Lato’s effort just before the break was deflected wide by a matter of centimetres.

VCF Mestalla went into halftime 1-0 down, but having created sufficient opportunities to give them optimism for the second period of play.

A shower began the second half, changing the playing conditions at Montigalà. Badalona also changed their strategy, playing deep and trying to run down the clock. Coach Curro Torres replaced Ayala with Aridai at the break in search of goals, and it was the new arrival into the game who had a great chance to score on 69 minutes; his effort went just over the top of Morales’ goal.

Sito and Rafa Mir were brought on as VCF Mestalla turned to all-out attack, but the team paid the price for their gamble when Badalona hit them on the counterattack. Victor García broke away, and Oliva finished off the move to make it 2-0, with only Badalona’s second shot of the game.

Rafa Mir, Sánchez and Sito forced late saves from the opposition goalkeeper before the end, whilst Sivera denied Agudo his second goal of the match. The greater effectiveness of Badalona allowed them to take the three points, leaving VCF Mestalla frustrated after a good performance.
