Home win against RCD Espanyol B keeps VCF Mestalla in contention (2-1)

Enero, 14 2017 -

VCF Mestalla took a 2-1 win over Espanyol B to continue in the upper echelons of the Segunda División B Grupo III, with a strong performance at the Antonio Puchades.

Curro Torres' side opened the scoring after just 2 minutes, as the fans were still filing into the stadium. Aridai finished off the move to make it 1-0, with the Espanyol B players appealing for an offside call that was not forthcoming. It was Aridai's tenth strike of the season.

Espanyol B had several chances to equalise following the early goal, and Rufo's effort over the crossbar was the best of them. On the half hour mark, Soria was denied by the crossbar, but otherwise it was the defensive order at the back who snuffed out the majority of opportunities.

A free kick from Sito also tested the woodwork, in VCF Mestalla's second chance on goal. They went into the break 1-0 up following an entertaining first half.

The second period was just as evenly balanced, and Curro Torres decided to switch things up with the introduction of Jordi Sánchez in place of Aridai.
Nacho Gil tried his luck from outside the box in a good chance for VCF Mestalla, but the best was still to come: Nacho Vidal brought the ball forward, gave a pinpoint pass to the fresh Sánchez, and the left back slammed the ball home to make it 2-0.

Espanyol B pulled a goal back on 75 minutes through Álex Bermejo, setting up a tense final quarter-hour. Although Ayala missed a late attempt to reestablish a more comfortable advantage, VCF Mestalla nevertheless took the three points at home.
