VCF Mestalla held to 1-1 draw by CD Ebro

Enero, 22 2017 -

Amidst cold conditions at the Estadio del Carmen, VCF Mestalla took a point away from their visit to Zaragoza. The Valencia CF second team claimed a 1-1 draw against CD Ebro, with both goals coming in the second half.

The team had a chance to score early on in the first half. Seven minutes in, Rafa Mir hit the post off Nacho Gil’s free kick, with Quim Araujo unable to put in the rebound.

Cifu followed up with another opportunity before the quarter hour mark, which the defence cleared with a last gasp intervention. VCF Mestalla were the more adventurous of the two teams, attacking insistently in the first period.

Gil’s header wide, having got between the two opposition centre backs, continued the run of chances, and although CD Ebro twice had a look on goal before half time with long range shots from Alain and Txema Pan, the game went into the break with the scoreline at 0-0.

A more direct approach from CD Ebro in the second half saw the deadlock broken on 63 minutes, courtesy of a cross in from Martinez that was finished off by Gabarre to make it 1-0.

VCF Mestalla responded in quick succession: Three minutes after coming on as a substitute, Eugeni swung in a corner that evaded the opposition goalkeeper and went into the net. The ‘Olympic goal’ would be the last of the game, and when Nacho Gil missed the final opportunity to get a winner, VCF Mestalla had to settle for a draw away from home.
