VCF Mestalla held to 1-1 draw in city derby

Abril, 15 2017 -

VCF Mestalla were held to a 1-1 draw at the Antonio Puchades in their derby game against Atletico Levante. An early goal from Rafa Mir looked to have been enough to give the Valencia CF second team the victory, until Atletico Levante's  Ito equalised just five minutes from time.

Three minutes after the game began, Aridai burst down the right and crossed in to the near post, where Mir was able to stab the ball home.

With the score at 1-0, Atletico Levante tried to break through the VCF Mestalla defence. However, the back line was typically solid and denied their opponents any chances on goal in the first period.

VCF Mestalla's best chance of doubling their lead came on the half hour mark, when Javi Jimenez' cross turned into a shot as it swerved towards goal. The away team's goalkeeper, Sostres, had to keep the effort out at full stretch.

The Valencia CF players came out strong for the second half, and Mir set up another chance early on. His cross to Aridai was backheeled wide by his fellow striker. Aridai would have another opportunity -this time from a set piece-go just off target.

Whilst Atletico Levante had provided very little in the way of danger, they regrouped in the final ten minutes. First came a shot that goalkeeper Ferri kept out, and then the cruel blow in the 85th minute: A cross in from Arturo to Ito, who connected to score the equaliser.

Despite a late push from VCF Mestalla, the score would remain 1-1 at the final whistle and the points would be shared in the derby. The team remain firm candidates for the Segunda División B Grupo III playoffs, and have four big games remaining in which to confirm their place.
