Valencia CF and UN Women receive 2016 FEDEPE International Award at event presided over by Queen of Spain

On Tuesday, July 26th, Valencia Club de Fútbol received the 2016 FEDEPE International Award for their collaboration with UN Women. VCF chairwoman Layhoon Chan accepted the award on behalf of the club, with UN Women’s Strategic Partnerships and Resource Mobilization Advisor, José Carlos Ferrer, doing likewise for the organisation. The event was presided over by Her Majesty Queen Letizia of Spain and attended by the Spanish Minister for Health, Social Matters and Equality, Alfonso Alonso, amongst other prestigious figures. The award recognises the efforts of Valencia CF and UN Women in their support of the role of women -especially in the workplace.

The FEDEPE Awards honour the work of women in the economy, in society and in culture, with awards in specific categories for those businesses, entities and media that have favoured or boosted the role of women at work.

After an initial welcome to the event from the Mayoress of Madrid, Manuela Carmena, next up to speak was Ana Bujaldón, the president of the FEDEPE. In her speech, she highlighted the aspirations and objectives for the association in their quest to achieve equal conditions for men and women, shared with those present. Bujaldón then handed over the awards to the recipients, including Layhoon Chan and José Carlos Ferrer on behalf of Valencia CF and UN Women, respectively.

The VCF chairwoman thanked the FEDEPE for the joint award, and said that "When Valencia CF and UN Women decided to join forces to promote gender equality, we did not expect to recieve so much attention, support and understanding for such a pioneering collaboration between an organisation that defends the rights of women and a professional sport traditionally dominated by men. We are immensely proud to be the first professional sports club in the world to become an ambassador for gender equality. That is why I would like to thank UN Women for believing in us, showing confidence in us and giving us this opportunity. It is a unique opportunity to do things in a different way and solve a very old problem". José Carlos Ferrer added his gratitude to the FEDEPE and Valencia CF.

The award for Valencia CF and UN Women is a show of appreciation and support for the collective work that the two entities have been undertaking since 2015 in their fight for gender equality. Both institutions continue to carry out multiple campaigns together on both a local and global level, with the aim being to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women around the world. The Club and UN Women continue to fight with great determination to eradicate violence against women and girls, educate about gender equality and support the empowerment of women.  Their desire for change has been reflected in the multitude of activities that have made Valencia CF an exceptional ambassador for this essential social task.

The 2016 FEDEPE Awards have the support of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, and the European Social Fund. Also receiving an award was Caixabank, for their 25th anniversary.
