Clinical Rodrigo gives VCF victory over Nigeria All-Stars

August, 10 2016 -

Ayestarán's side won 2-1 in the LaLigaWorld match held in Alzira

Rodrigo Moreno hit a late winner as Valencia CF beat NPFL Nigeria All-Stars 2-1 in a preseason friendly on Wednesday.

The 25-year-old expertly brought down a long ball by Álvaro Medrán, before rounding keeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa, and slotting the ball into an empty net after 83 minutes.

Medrán had put the blanquinegros ahead when he steered home a header after eight minutes and Joseph Osadiaye brought the Nigeria side level on the half hour.

Pako Ayestarán continued to fine-tune his side with only the Trofeo Naranja this Saturday against Fiorentina to be played before Valencia’s LaLiga campaign starts against Las Palmas in eleven days time.

Martín Montoya made his first starting appearance at right back and also Dani Parejo began his first preseason game in midfield as Valencia dominated possession from the start.

They moved the ball around comfortably through the middle of the pitch and were able to make inroads into the Nigerian’s defence.

Medrán continued his strong preseason campaign with the opening goal as he nodded a searching José Luis Gayà cross past the keeper.

Valencia looked in control with Medrán and Alcácer flashing shots wide while Parejo also hit a 20 yard free-kick over the crossbar.

Out of the blue, though, Nigeria drew level with their only chance on goal in the first half. A corner was punched into the air by Maty Ryan and Osadiaye headed it over the line.

Valencia pushed forward and were inches away from retaking the lead with keeper Ezenwa pushing away a dangerous  José Luis Gayà cross to Fede Cartabia and he fired narrowly over the crossbar from the centre of the penalty area.

Then in first half stoppage time, a Parejo free-kick fell to Alcácer who was adjudged to be offside when he knocked the ball home.

The priority was clearly to try out players and give as many a run out as possible with Ayestarán making a number of changes in the second half.

Chima Akas and Godwin Obaje both had efforts that didn’t threaten the Valencia goal while the blanquinegros continued to have a lot of the ball but found it difficult to create clear cut chances.

Medrán, though, headed wide with ten minutes to go and he was involved in the winner with the assist for Rodrigo who took his chance with aplomb.
