Mari Paz header gives VCF Femenino victory against Rayo Vallecano

Enero, 08 2017 -

A late Mari Paz header meant that VCF Femenino opened 2017 with a 0-1 win against Rayo Vallecano, on Matchday 15 of the Iberdrola Primera División Femenina RFEF.

The game was evenly matched in the first half, with the Valencia CF women's team providing danger through Mari Paz, Débora G, Carol and Szymanowski. Rayo Vallecano put goalkeeper Endler to the test with various chances for striker Natalia Pablos.

VCF Femenino gradually upped their control of the game, and Mari Paz in particular could have featured on the scoresheet multiple times. Four chances for her passed without a goal, and she would have to wait until the second half to find the net.

Long shots from Zornoza and attacks from Debora G and Carol added to the unsuccessful opportunities for the team in the second half. Whilst several imprecise passes enabled Rayo to hit on the counter, the VCF defence was as solid as ever and able to cut out any threat.

The only goal of the game eventually arrived in the 87th minute. After a corner was parried away, a return ball in was met by the VCF Femenino forward and she headed past Alicia.

The win was VCF Femenino's first in Vallecas since the 2014/15 campaign, and means that they close out the first half of the season in fourth place. They currently have 30 points to their name -ahead of Athletic Club by 3 points.
