VCF Femenino fight back to beat Athletic Club (1-2)

March, 19 2017 -

VCF Femenino continued in third place in the Iberdrola Primera División Femenina RFEF, as they came from behind to beat reigning league champions Athletic Club on Matchday 22. Mari Paz turned the scoreline around with two goals in the final 10 minutes.

A balanced opening 15 minutes saw neither side enjoy an abundance of chances or possesion, and it was not until the 26th minute that VCF Femenino goalkeeper Endler had any real work to do. She produced a spectacular save from Erika.

Ten minutes before half time, the away side could have found the net through N.Gaitán, whose shot across goal came close to the bottom of Ainhoa's right post.

Following a goalless first period, VCF Femenino came out with renewed vigour for the second half. Mari Paz fired an early shot over the crossbar, and Athletic Club's Nekane and Lucia lined up drives from outside the box. Damaris also put an effort wide of the left post for the Basque's, before they went 1-0 up through a header from Garazi -off a free kick by Erika.

In search of an equaliser, the main threat from VCF Femenino came from Mari Paz. Estefania Banini forced a save from the goalkeeper off a free kick as the Valencia CF women's team piled on the pressure, but it would be their top scorer who got them back on terms. On 84 minutes, Mari Paz latched onto a cross from Aedo to make it 1-1.

However, she was not finished for the afternoon. Three minutes later, she put in her 21st goal of the season to give VCF Femenino their fifth win in a row.
