Valencia CF go through to Copa del Rey Round of 16 with win against Leganés (2-1) December, 21 2016 - Valencia CF made their way safely through to the next round of the Copa del Rey with a 2-1 win at Mestalla over CD Leganés. A brace from Rodrigo Moreno ensured the victory on the night, with the aggregate result of 5-2 taking VCF onwards and ending 2016 on a positive note. The home side dominated the first half, showing particular intensity in the early going. There were two chances for Rodrigo in opening seven minutes: The first hit the post, the second flew over the top from close range from a Joao Cancelo cross.Just past the 10 minute mark, Rodrigo found himself through on goal once more. Having rounded the goalkeeper, he went wide and attempted to slot the ball home -only to be denied by the post for the second time. The follow-up shot from Álvaro Medrán went well over the Leganés crossbar. It was goalkeeper Iago Herrerín who saved Rodrigo's next effort on goal, as the Valencia CF striker headed a Medrán cross towards goal from inside the box. Finally, Valencia CF found the opening goal on 35 minutes. Medrán played through Rodrigo, who received the ball with a deft turn and -unfazed by the three defenders around him- placed the ball low into the net.Leganés' sole clear chance was that of Luciano, who smashed a shot into the side netting just after Rodrigo's goal.Munir headed wide when unmarked in the box, just before halftime, and VCF went into the break 1-0 up on the night (4-1 on aggregate).Just after the restart, Leganés found an equaliser through Darwin Machís. Having had an initial close range shot saved by Jaume, he put the follow-up in to make it 1-1. Although there was a question of whether there had been a handball in the buildup, the goal stood. The first substitution for Valencia CF saw the culmination of a dream for Carlos Soler, as he came on for Enzo Pérez and made his debut appearance at Mestalla. One of his first touches was a 60th minute shot from outside the area, which rolled wide of the left post. After an even spell of play that featured chances for both sides, VCF took the winning goal in the final minutes of play. Having caught Leganés in possession in their own half, the ball was opened up for Soler. He darted towards goal through the middle channel, skipped a challenge and sent a shot on target that was parried by Herrerín. Rodrigo was on hand to blast the ball home, giving Valencia CF the win.
