Valencia CF chairwoman, Layhoon Chan, speaks as part of a roundtable discussion with the Col.legi d 'Economistes of Catalunya (Economists Institute of Catalonia)
Valencia CF chairwoman, Layhoon Chan took part in a roundtable discussion held by the Col.legi d 'Economistes of Catalunya (Economists Institute of Catalonia) on Wednesday October 26th, alongside the deputy general for sports of the Catalan government, Gerard Figueras, and the executive director of RCD Espanyol, Ramon Robert. Also participating in the event were DAMM's director of Marketing and Communication, Jaume Alemany, and president of the Joventut de Badalona basketball team, Jordi Villacampa.
Ms. Chan spoke in her speech about her experience at the club and in a Spanish league "very attractive to foreign investors." She also explained that majority shareholder Peter Lim "is a big fan of football and wanted to have a global football brand with a long tradition and history, and also deal with the challenge of rebuilding Valencia CF and taking the club back to where it deserves to be."
"After 18 months at the Club, I can say that having a football club is not simply a passtime, since the money that moves in the world of football is not readily profitable and the owners have to have a very long-term committment to the Club. The acquisition process was very long and difficult -there were seven international investors," she continued.
The chairwoman also stressed that TV rights "will increase in the future and will be key to the restructuring of VCF. The club have achieved financial stability, and we now seek sporting stability -and the third step will be the new stadium."
She concluded her talk by acknowledging that "understanding European football culture, especially in Spain, is a challenge for Asian investors. We must balance the business side with 'sentiment'. Also, when an investor from overseas comes to Spain, they must have legal security .The interpretations and the changing criteria for laws is something that is strange".
