Mestalla, a historic setting for a historic Valencia CF Femenino - Levante UD Femenino match

The Valencian derby in la Liga Iberdrola was attended by 17,000 spectators

Mestalla was opened on the 20th of May, 1923, and this Sunday, 23rd of April, 2017, it opened its doors to welcome women’s football’s Valencian derby for the first time. It was also the first Valencia CF Femenino match to be played at the stadium. Mestalla: a historic setting for a historic Valencia CF Femenino – Levante UD Femenino match. The game brought 17,000 spectators together in the blanquinegro manor, breaking the record of 14,000 spectators set at the Atlético de Madrid - FC Barcelona match at the Vicente Calderón in la Liga Iberdrola.

The president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Ximo Puig, was present at the game, as well as vice-president Mónica Oltra. Both were presented with copies of the commemorative poster made for the derby by captains Ivana Andrés, from Valencia CF, and Sonia Prim, from Levante UD. The Valencia CF chairwoman, Layhoon Chan, the Valencia CF Femenino chairman, Salvador Belda, and the honorary chairman, Pedro Malabia, presented copies of the poster to the Levante UD chairman, Quico Catalán, and Joaquín M. Longares, commercial director of Iberdrola Comunitat Valenciana and Murcia, sponsor of la Liga.
In a game which Valencia CF won 6-0 against Levante UD, the real winner was Spanish women’s football.
