VCFF pitted against Athletic Club for Copa de la Reina quarter finals

Saturday June 3rd at 12:30pm

VCFF were drawn against Athletic Club for the quarter-finals were they will look to go through to the semi-finals on Saturday June 3rd. The 35th edition has two stages, one stage will take place on the first weekend of June at the Matapiñoneras ground: FC Barcelona - Real Sociedad; Athletic Club - Valencia CF; Atlético de Madrid - Rayo Vallecano; and UD Granadilla - Levante UD.  And the second stage, at la Ciudad del Futbol: semi-finals on June 16th and the final on the 18th of June.

Blanquinegras and leonas have crossed paths both in league and cup. This season VCFF have beaten Athletic Club in both meetings: 3-1 at VCF Ciudad Deportiva Aihnoa Vicente (OG) Zornoza y Carol and Zulema for Athletic Club. In the reverse game at Lezama Mari Paz Vilas picked up a brace. While in the Cup they have faced each other in 2014 which saw Athletic go through and in the following year VCFF progressed on to the next stage.

VCFF have taken part in four editions. In 2011  they bow out against Real Sociedad  in 2015 were the runners-up against Sporting  Club Huelva  after beating Athletic Club in the  quarter-finals and in2016 they were knocked out in the semi-finals by the current champions of La lIberdrola Primera División Femenina and cup defenders Atlético Féminas.

The Argentine coach analysed the tie against the Bibao side:”Athletic are a tough opposition and a great team with great players.  Despite having won both league games, we know how difficult it is to face them. We knew ahead of the Copa de La Reina we have to take on our rivals with maximum respect”.

He highlighted:” We are focused on ourselves, having a good performance and having our minds set on Athletic Club without thinking any further in a single-legged tie anything can happen and we are coming into it according to the difficulty but with the momentum of the good season and the good football the team are playing. We have to take it as a final we only have one chance of playing it which is against Athletic Club. We have the possibility of playing two or three more. That’s why we must play it respecting our rivals and knowing that  it will be a very tough game but with belief.
