VCF Mestalla beat Murcia at Mestalla and take the lead in the tie (2-1)

June, 04 2017 -

Quim Araujo's brace

Curro Torres’ side once again put on a show for the fans and managed to get a hard-fought win against Real Murcia in an action packed game, Quim Araujo’s brace gave VCF Mestalla the win in a game attended by over 17,000 fans at Mestalla.

The opening moments of the game were played at breakneck speed by both teams, and while it was end to end stuff from kick-off, there were no clear chances in the first 20 minutes. Real Murcia were finding it hard to unlock the Valencianista defence, and VCF Mestalla were getting themselves into good positions in the attacking third without managing to threaten the away side’s goal.

The first real chance for the blanquinegros came on 23 minutes after some great work by Nacho Gil down the right flank, which left Rafa Mir one on one with the ‘keeper. The striker was unable to get his shot off but was brought down on the edge of the box, although the referee decided to let it go unpunished. In the following minutes the Mestalla crowd became increasingly impatient with the referee and his assistants.

However, the crowd soon had more important things to focus on, like celebrating the opening goal from Quim Araujo on the 34th minute. The VCF Mestalla midfielder picked up the ball and turned into space, firing the ball past the Simón to make it 1-0.

The blanquinegros were intent on making it through to half-time with their lead intact, and seemed to be in control, when suddenly a quick attack from Murcia caught the Valencianistas by surprise and Armando’s effort crept in past Sivera to make it 1-1 at the break.

The second half began much as the first had, being played at a furious pace. After VCF Mestalla had already created a few chances, in the 58th minute captain Quim Araujo launched a missile into the back of the net to put his team in the lead once again.

However, the blanquinegros weren’t content to just sit back and defend their 2-1 lead; they continued to attack Murcia in the hope of killing off the tie. Rafa Mir came close with a driven shot across to the back post, which just whistled wide. And in the 80th minute Jordi Sánchez came so close again to getting the third goal that would make things more comfortable.

Another win for this VCF Mestalla side who seem to know no limits and keep on competing at the highest level in the play-offs. The win today gives Curro Torres’ team an all-important lead to take to the Nueva Condomina, where the Valencianistas could book their ticket to the final round of the play-offs.
