VCF Mestalla’s magnificent season doesn’t end with promotion to LaLiga 1|2|3 June, 25 2017 - Curro Torres’ side couldn’t quite find the goals they needed to get past Albacete in a drawn game that they had to win. Despite their valiant effort, VCF Mestalla weren’t able to clinch the promotion they deserved as reward for their brilliant season. The game started at a quick pace but was rather scrappy in the opening minutes, as both sides tried to settle into the game and win the midfield battle. Just before the 15th minute, Cifu had the Blanquinegros’ first strike on goal from distance, but it flew over the bar. Albacete knew that they had their goal from the first leg to defend, and they sat deep, trying to cancel out VCF Mestalla’s threat on the break. Curro Torres’ side began to find an outlet in Nacho Vidal, who was looking to get up the right wing whenever possible; in one of his incursions into the Albacete half he managed to find Aridai, who had a good effort saved by Tomeu. On the 40th minute, Aridai got hold of the ball inside the box and looked like he might have been brought down just before being able to get a shot off, but nothing was given. The referee blew up for half-time five minutes later, with VCF Mestalla knowing they were still very much in the tie. The second half began much as the first had ended, with the Valencianistas in control of possession and playing in Albacete territory. Aridai came close with a free kick in the 47th minute, setting the tone for a half which would be dominated by Curro Torres’ side. As the game entered its final third, Albacete were getting 11 men behind the ball and defending their lead resolutely, while VCF Mestalla continued to attack down both wings, looking for the goal they needed to level things up. On the 72nd minute, substitute Rafa Mir had a header brilliantly saved by the Albacete ‘keeper. It was a reaction save that needed to be out of the top drawer in order to keep Mir’s effort out. Eugeni took the resulting corner, and caught Tomeu unaware, looping his set-piece over the goalkeeper and onto the back post. The ball just wouldn’t seem to go in, and Albacete started to sense that luck was going to be on their side. Despite giving it all they had, VCF Mestalla just couldn’t find a way to get the goal they needed. They end their season without the promotion they deserved. They have been quite brilliant this season, and only lost one game in the whole play-off phase. The support they’ve had in the post-season has also been remarkable, testament to the fact that they’ve really caught the imagination of Valencianismo; this match was attended by over 1200 VCF fans.
