Fran Villalba and Quim Araujo give their take on events after draw at Albacete(0-0)

The Blanquinegros gave us their views at the Carlos Belmonte

VCF Mestalla players Fran Villalba and Quim Araujo spoke at the Carlos Belmonte after the goalless draw away at Albacete Balompié. The 0-0 draw in the second leg of the third and final round of the play-offs for promotion to LaLiga 1|2|3 wasn’t enough for Curro Torres’ side, after the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Mestalla.

Fran Villalba: “It’s a shame because, in my opinion, they were very defensive and we took the game to them. In the second half we opened the game up a bit more and we had some clear chances. It was such a shame that one wouldn’t go in so that we could take it to extra-time.

The fans have been supporting us to the max. We’ve only got words of thanks for them. We’ll go for it again next year.

We’re gutted. It hurts. We played well, especially in the second half when the game opened up. I think we would have been deserved winners if we’d won it. I think we were just missing that bit of luck. We had chances, we had control of the ball, all we were missing today was that little bit of luck that you need.

I’d like to thank my teammates for the effort they’ve made all season. They’ve fought hard in every game and given it their all. I want to thank my teammates and the coaching staff for everything we’ve done during this unforgettable year.

Quim Araujo: “We came out looking to win the game; in the first half we found it a bit tougher and they defended well. In the second half we left it all out on the pitch. We had chances; we hit the post, we put good moves together, their ‘keeper had a good game, we got balls into the box that could have ended up in the net…but it wouldn’t go in.

At the end of the day, football is about the ball going in, but you can’t take anything away from this team and the amount of work they’ve done all season. It’s been a dream season, the team have been really good throughout. We competed to the very end. We’re gutted but we can hold our heads high because the work we’ve done has been exceptional.

The fans have been amazing. We’re lost for words, we don’t know how to thank them for all the support they’ve given us. It’s very rare for a B team to have support like this with so many people coming to the games. What we’ve achieved is due to the work we’ve done but we also have to thank the fans for the part they’ve played, I’ve only got good words for them. They’ve given us goose bumps, they’ve been pushing us right to the end. That was really important and it’s been the best thing for us.”
