Valencia CF picked up a win in the last match of the North American tour, the fourth game of the pre-season, after beating FC Cincinnati with goals from Nando and Zaza.
VCF went into the game looking to get back on track after the defeat against NY Cosmos and get a win to round off the North American tour. Marcelino picked a starting line-up of Neto, Montoya, Vezo, Javi Jiménez, Centelles, Nando, Parejo, Medrán, Orellana, Negredo and Zaza.
FC Cincinnati, who had played more games in recent weeks, started the game well with plenty of possession while VCF took a little longer to get into their stride. However, slowly but surely the Blanquinegros began coming back into it. Medrán had a crack from distance that flew over, and soon after he had another effort saved by Hildebrant. FC Cincinnati responded with a great hit from Quinn that Neto did well to tip over the bar for a corner. Back up at the other end Zaza found himself put through on goal by Parejo, but was unable to finish. From the resulting corner Javi Jiménez had a good chance to open the scoring but couldn’t keep his header on target. Valencia CF were now dominating the game and the FC Cincinnati defence were having trouble dealing with balls over the top for Zaza to run onto. However, the whistle went for half-time with the score still level at 0-0.
When the two sides came back out after the break Marcelino had made just the one change, bringing on Abdennour for Javi Jiménez. The Valencianistas started the second half looking to press high and win possession in dangerous areas. Medrán was once again the first to get an effort in on goal, his drilled shot was well stopped by Jaye. The goal was coming and VCF began turning the screw. A beautifully weighted ball from Parejo set Nando free, and he drove towards goal, whipping his finish across the ‘keeper and just inside the back post to make it 0-1.
Marcelino gave Eugeni, Nacho Gil, Nacho Vidal and Rafa Mir playing time off the bench as Valencia CF knocked the ball around the park. And in the final minute, the Blanquinegros were able to double their lead through Zaza, from a counter-attack after the opposition ‘keeper had gone up for a corner and failed to get back.
