Valencia CF dominate but their long unbeaten run ends in Getafe defeat

December, 03 2017 -

Valencia CF fall to their first defeat of LaLiga's 2017/2018 campaign

Valencia CF’s club-record equalling 13-game unbeaten run ended with a 1-0 defeat at Getafe on Matchday 14. Marcelino’s team dominated the encounter at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, with captain Dani Parejo in sparkling form, but were unable to take their opportunities against a well-organised home side.

The first half saw few clear-cut chances. On 16 minutes Parejo tested Vicente Guaita with a low free kick that bounced just in front of the Getafe keeper, who managed to beat it away. Five minutes later, he did the same with another Parejo effort, this time diving to his right.

Midway through the first half, the home side were down to ten men. A reckless challenge from Mauro Arambarri, who had already been booked, saw the Uruguayan midfielder receive a second yellow card. Valencia CF’s best chance of the half came in the 40th minute, when Parejo’s corner found Carlos Soler who fired just over at the far post.

A half-time tactical change saw Nacho Gil replace Geoffrey Kondogbia. Getafe started the second period well, and on 51 minutes Ángel shot wide when one-on-one with Neto. Thereafter Valencia CF put increasing pressure on the home side, before Getafe took the lead against the run of play on 65 minutes. A deflection meant Neto was wrong-footed and stood no chance with Markel Bergara’s long range strike.

The visitors fought back, a brilliant fingertip save from Guaita touching Dani Parejo’s free kick onto the post. The resulting corner saw Simone Zaza head onto the roof of the net. Carlos Soler went close in added time but ten-man Getafe remained hard to break down and it ended 1-0, a result that nonetheless leaves Valencia CF in second place, five points off the top of the table.
