An impressive Valencia CF beat Celta in a tight game (2-1)

Diciembre, 09 2017 -

Zaza and Parejo, from the spot, keep Valencia CF second in the table

Valencia CF got back to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over RC Celta at Mestalla on Saturday. Simone Zaza scored the opener, his tenth goal in LaLiga this season, and Iago Aspas replied after the break before Dani Parejo clinched the win from the penalty spot. The result leaves Valencia CF flying high in the table, in second place.

Coach Marcelino García Toral picked the same line-up that had started at Getafe the previous week, in a show of faith in his players. The game began at a good pace with the home side on top, and just two minutes in, Rúben Vezo hit the post from a corner. At the other end, Pione Sisto, who leads LaLiga in terms of assists, whipped in a cross that landed just wide of goal.

Carlos Soler got in behind the RC Celta defence with 22 minutes gone, shooting low into the side netting, and soon afterwards Valencia CF had the lead. Dani Parejo’s 28th minute corner was met by Simone Zaza, whose unstoppable header flew into the roof of the net at the near post. The goal means the Italian striker is LaLiga’s second highest scorer, behind only Lionel Messi.

RC Celta’s best chance of the half came on 34 minutes. Iago Aspas’ header was goalbound until Neto pulled off a sensational one-handed save. It was Aspas who equalised just after half time, pouncing to score from close range. Valencia CF responded, with Marcelino introducing Nacho Gil and Santi Mina off the bench, and it was Gil who was fouled inside the box by Pablo Hernández in the 80th minute.

Dani Parejo stepped up to coolly dispatch the penalty, Rubén Blanco unable to keep it out. It was enough to secure the win, as Valencia CF displayed real composure under pressure in added time to complete a deserved victory. It’s a vital three points, and the perfect response to last weekend’s result in Getafe.
