Valencia CF give the fans a great win against Girona on Three Kings day (2-1)

January, 06 2018 -

They reacted brilliantly after going behind and completed the comeback to keep flying high in the table

Valencia CF got their first win of 2018 with a deserved 2-1 victory over Girona at Mestalla on “Three Kings” day. Marcelino García Toral’s side fought back from a goal down to earn the three points, Dani Parejo scoring the winner from the penalty spot after the outstanding Gonçalo Guedes had forced the VCF equaliser, while Luciano Vietto came off the bench late on to make his debut.

Matchday 18 in LaLiga saw Marcelino return to the Valencia CF bench wearing a neckbrace, to a warm welcome from the Mestalla crowd. The coach made seven changes from the midweek Copa del Rey tie in Gran Canaria, with Neto returning in goal, Gabriel, Gayà and Nacho Vidal in defence, Dani Parejo and Guedes in midfield and Rodrigo Moreno up front. As for Girona, Valencia academy product Portu started in attack alongside nine-goal top scorer Christian Stuani.

The Catalans were close to going ahead with just three minutes gone, Neto doing well to keep out Juanpe’s near-post header. At the other end, Gonçalo Guedes looked in sensational form from the start, cutting inside on 5 minutes to unleash a fierce rising shot that flashed just wide of the target. Soon afterwards though, Girona went ahead, as Portu’s well-placed header from Johan Mojica’s cross beat Neto. The former VCF player didn’t celebrate the goal out of respect for the Valencia fans.

Marcelino’s team responded well to that early setback. On 17 minutes a Dani Parejo corner found Garay at the far post but the angle was difficult and his header was saved by Bono. Then Andreas Pereira found some space just outside the area on the right, and his swerving shot was beaten away by the busy Girona keeper. There was nothing Bono could do about the VCF equaliser, however. It came after some magic from Guedes, dancing down the left, tying Pablo Maffeo in knots, before his fizzing cross was turned into his own net by Ramalho.

After 34 minutes, the home side had the opportunity to make it 2-1, Gabriel’s powerful header just kept out by Bono diving to his left. Then, three minutes later, appeals for a Valencia penalty were turned down when Rodrigo looked to get to the ball first before being brought down by the Moroccan shot-stopper. After the half-time interval, with just a minute gone, the referee did point to the spot when José Gayà was brought down. Captain Dani Parejo made no mistake to put VCF in front.

There was plenty more drama to come. On 52 minutes Santi Mina was inches away from scoring as he slid into the six-yard box, just failing to connect with Rodrigo’s cross. Then Mojica almost caught out Neto with a vicious cross/shot from out wide, which the Brazilian did well to keep out. With 73 minutes gone, the Mestalla rose to its feet to applaud the introduction of new Valencia number 8 Luciano Vietto, who replaced Santi Mina. The Argentinian striker looked lively in the closing stages as the team went for the third goal, shooting just wide in the 90th minute.

It remained 2-1 at the final whistle. Next up for Marcelino García Toral’s side, a Copa del Rey last 16 second leg against UD Las Palmas at Mestalla on Tuesday, having drawn the first leg one-all.
