Guedes and Rodrigo score to beat Deportivo (1-2) and end a spectacular first half of the season

Enero, 13 2018 -

Valencia CF are up to 40 points in LaLiga and comfortably inside the Champions League places

An inspired performance from Gonçalo Guedes helped Valencia CF to a 1-2 win at Deportivo La Coruña. The Portuguese winger scored the opener and was a constant menace throughout on LaLiga’s matchday 19, before Rodrigo Moreno added the second with an hour gone. It’s a third victory in a row in all competitions for Marcelino García Toral’s side, who remain unbeaten in 2018. They now have 40 points from the first half of the season – a tally only bettered once in the club’s history.

The Valencia coach made eight changes from the midweek 4-0 win over UD Las Palmas, with Neto replacing Jaume in goal, Garay and Gayà coming into the defence, new signing Francis Coquelin partnering Dani Parejo in midfield with Guedes out wide, and Rodrigo Moreno joining Santi Mina in attack. Luciano Vietto had to settle for a place on the bench after his sensational midweek hat trick.

Guedes was the outstanding performer in the first half. Early on, his long-range effort was deflected behind for a corner. It was the hosts who went closest to opening the scoring, though, when they hit the woodwork after 12 minutes. Borges’ attempted header from a corner came off his shoulder and rattled the bar. Guedes was involved again with 26 minutes gone, as his cross looked to be creeping in at the far post before Rubén pushed it wide. Every time the young wideman picked up the ball, he was running at the Deportivo defence, giving full-back Juanfran a torrid time.

It came as no surprise then that the Portuguese winger made the breakthrough on 37 minutes. He cut in from the left and his low shot caught out Rubén Martínez, who let the ball slip through his grasp. In the second half, just after the hour mark, Rodrigo Moreno scored to make it two, settling the game and securing the three points. Santi Mina did really well to put pressure on Depor centre-back Raúl Albentosa, winning the ball back, before Rodrigo’s shot from just outside the box deflected off Pedro Mosquera to wrongfoot the goalkeeper. The striker now has nine league goals this season.

Francis Coquelin came off with ten minutes remaining, after a solid debut in which he didn’t put a foot wrong. Five minutes later, Florin Andone pulled a goal back for Depor with a close-range header, but it was too little too late. The hosts went close through Adrian in added time, but Valencia hung on for a 1-2 win and all three points. Next for Marcelino’s side, a Copa del Rey quarter final first leg against Alavés at Mestalla on Wednesday.
