Valencia CF beat Levante UD thanks to goals from Santi Mina, Vietto and a Parejo penalty

Valencia CF beat Levante UD 3-1 in a thrilling derby victory at Mestalla to get back to winning ways on LaLiga’s Matchday 23. An early header from the outstanding Santi Mina, who also hit the woodwork twice, was followed by a Luciano Vietto poacher’s finish and a late Dani Parejo penalty in the second half. It’s an important win which keeps the team flying high in LaLiga, as Valencia remain third in the table.

Marcelino García Toral made five changes from Thursday’s cup semi-final second leg at Mestalla, with Neto returning in goal, Rubén Vezo partnering Gabriel at centre-back, Guedes and Soler coming into the midfield and Santi Mina joining Vietto in attack. As for Levante UD, they featured January signing Giampalo Pazzini up front, after his goalscoring cameo against Real Madrid last weekend.

The first half saw Valencia CF dominate, creating chances from the outset. On 11 minutes, Santi Mina headed just over the bar from Dani Parejo’s corner. Then, a minute later, Carlos Soler combined with Luciano Vietto, cutting inside at pace to shoot over the top. Next, with 17 minutes gone, the Mestalla side took a deserved lead. Once again, it was Santi Mina with his head. A wicked Parejo inswinging corner was glanced into the corner of the net by the striker for his ninth league goal of the season.

A minute later though, Levante had grabbed an equaliser through Postigo. Valencia responded well to the setback. The best opportunity of the remainder of the first half fell to Santi Mina, undoubtedly the man of the match. In the 42nd minute his near post run was picked out by Gayà’s low cross and the resulting effort skimmed the woodwork. The second half saw Valencia dominating possession, and with 65 minutes gone, their efforts were rewarded.

Luciano Vietto reacted quickest to a six-yard box scramble, the Argentinan forward scoring his first LaLiga goal for the club. As the game opened up, Valencia threatened to run away with the game. Kondogbia could have made it 3-1 when he drove through the middle, before his powerful left-footed strike was beaten away by Oier. On 80 minutes, Santi Mina hit the woodwork again. This time Guedes was the architect, his run and perfectly weighted pass finding the striker who beat the goalkeeper but clipped the post.

In the 87th minute, the game was wrapped up. Substitute Simone Zaza was fouled in the box and captain Dani Parejo stepped up to tuck away his fifth league goal this season, four of them coming from the spot. Zaza himself could have made it four in added time but shot well over the bar. A vital three points for Marcelino’s side, and now the group have a full week to prepare for next Saturday’s game at Málaga for the first time in 2018.
