A fantastic finish at La Rosaleda as Valencia CF get an important victory (1-2)

February, 17 2018 -

Coquelin and Parejo, from the spot, complete the comeback against Málaga in five spectacular minutes

A thrilling, dramatic late comeback saw Valencia CF beat Málaga CF 2-1 at La Rosaleda on LaLiga’s Matchday 24. Marcelino’s team were trailing as the game entered its final ten minutes but a brilliant headed equaliser from Francis Coquelin and a coolly-taken Dani Parejo penalty, after Rodrigo had been fouled when in on goal, saw them take all three important points back to Mestalla for their second win in a row. The result means Valencia remain in the Champions League spots, in third place.

Marcelino García Toral had made just two changes from the winning team that had beaten Levante UD 3-1 in the derby last Sunday, with the big news being Jeison Murillo returning from a three-month injury absence to partner Gabriel Paulista in defence, and Francis Coquelin replaced Geoffrey Kondogbia in central midfield. Málaga CF started the game rock bottom of the table on 13 points and without a win since early December, with six defeats and two draws since then.

The first half saw a confident start from Valencia CF. After 6 minutes, Gayà’s cross was headed over the bar by Santi Mina, as the Galician striker looked to continue his fine goalscoring run of form. Then in the 9th minute, Gonçalo Guedes, who was electric all evening, found space outside the area and got a quick shot away to test Roberto. It was against the run of play then that Málaga took the lead with 27 minutes gone. January signing Brown Ideye got on the end of a corner, tucking the ball just inside the far post.

There were no real chances in what was left of the opening 45 minutes. Early in the second half, Málaga had a goal ruled out for a push by En-Nesyri inside the box. With an hour played, Simone Zaza and Rodrigo Moreno replaced Santi Mina and Luciano Vietto in a double change as Marcelino looked to get Valencia CF back into the game. It remained Guedes who looked the man most likely to shake things up, though, bursting down the right wing after 62 minutes and bearing down on the Málaga goal before being cynically taken out by Iturra, who was rightly cautioned.

It was in the last ten minutes that everything changed, as Valencia CF turned the game on its head. First, Francis Coquelin equalised with a fantastic near post header from a corner, the French midfielder’s first goal in a Valencia shirt. His wild celebrations showed just how much it meant. Then, on 84 minutes, Guedes played Rodrigo Moreno clean through on goal with a delicately weighted pass. He was tugged back by Ignasi Miquel, who rightly received his marching orders, inside the area and it fell to Dani Parejo to step up and score the resulting penalty. The captain rarely fails from the spot.

There was almost more late drama as Málaga goalkeeper Roberto, up for one last set piece, headed just wide of goal, but then Valencia fans could breathe again as the final whistle went. Now Marcelino’s side have another full week to prepare for their next LaLiga encounter, at Mestalla against Real Sociedad next Sunday.
