A comprehensive win for Valencia CF against Real Betis (2-0)

Marzo, 04 2018 -

The fans enjoyed watching a team that gave their opponent no chance, maintaining their eight point lead over fifth place and keeping a clean sheet

Valencia CF stated their Champions League credentials with a comprehensive 2-0 win over Real Betis at Mestalla on Matchday 27 in LaLiga. Rodrigo Moreno scored first, a clinical finish after an end-to-end move, before Simone Zaza doubled the lead early in the second half. The result means Marcelino García Toral’s men are eight points clear of fifth-placed Sevilla, comfortably in the top four, and just a point behind Real Madrid in third.

Marcelino made five changes to the team that drew 1-1 at San Mamés on Wednesday, with Montoya returning at right-back, Carlos Soler and Gonçalo Guedes starting out wide, and the in-form Santi Mina partnering Rodrigo Moreno up front. As for Quique Setién’s Real Betis, a much changed side from midweek featured youth product Loren in attack, as well as former VCF winger Joaquín.

The game started with the Mestalla crowd in full voice, and Marcelino’s side looking to get on the front foot. There were no clear chances in the opening twenty minutes – before Valencia CF scored with their first opportunity. It was a glorious move in the 23rd minute, from one end of the pitch to the other, with Rodrigo Moreno controlling the long ball forwards with a great first touch, before shooting past Adan.

It was the Spain international’s tenth LaLiga goal of the season, the third VCF player to reach that milestone after Zaza and Santi Mina, a demonstration of how Valencia are far from reliant on just one player in attack. Three minutes later, Kondogbia’s shot was blocked on the edge of the box as the home side pushed for a second. Then on 37 minutes Marcelino was forced into an early change, with Simone Zaza replacing the injured Santi Mina.

The Italian looked keen to make an impression, and just after the interval, he made it 2-0. After Rodrigo and Dani Parejo had both had chances to score, denied by Adan, Valencia kept the pressure on, and the excellent Geoffrey Kondogbia spotted that Zaza had drifted into space in between the Betis centre-backs. His first touch plucked the  ball out of the air, and the second beat Adan. It was Zaza’s eleventh league goal, matching Mina as VCF’s top scorer in the competition, and the Italian forward’s first goal in 2018.

On 50 minutes Zaza was again involved, as he was challenged in the box and Valencia’s penalty appeals were waved away. Seven minutes later, Betis had the chance to pull one back, as Joaquín’s free kick was headed for the bottom corner before being pushed away by Neto. Then on the hour mark, Fabian had the ball in the back of the net after Neto had saved well from Loren, but the goal was correctly ruled out for a tight offside decision. A second goal was disallowed in the 75th minute, for Loren’s foul on the Brazilian keeper. Moments later, Valencia substitute Francis Coquelin could have made it 3-0, as his shot was pushed wide by Adan.

It’s another vital three points for Valencia CF in their push for Champions League football. Next up on LaLiga Matchday 28, it’s a trip to the Sanchez Pizjuan to play Sevilla in a massive game next Saturday afternoon.
