Rodrigo tucks away two deft Kondogbia passes to beat Sevilla FC (0-2)

Marzo, 10 2018 -

Valencia CF extend their lead over Sevilla FC to 11 points, with a clinical Rodrigo and an absolute wall between the posts in Neto, who kept his second consective clean sheet.

Valencia CF visited Sevilla FC on Saturday (16:15CET) at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on matchday 28 of LaLiga Santander, as Marcelino's men looked to put an end to their winless run on the road.

Marcelino’s side were off to a positive start, playing their typical possession football and trying to find a foothold in the game in the opening minutes.

Valencia CF settled themselves into the game and Rodrigo provided Valencia CF the breakthrough on the counter-attack, following a delightful Kondogbia pass over the top which allowed him to capitalise on an Escudero mistake and slot a finish past Sergio Rico on 24 minutes.

The home side looked to get themselves back on level terms just after the half-hour mark, but Neto pulled off a superb stop at the near post to turn Sarabia’s flicked effort behind for a corner kick, following a teasing Layun cross. Muriel had Sevilla FC’s last meaningful chance of the first half on 42 minutes, when he crashed an effort onto the bar and Franco Vazquez’s follow-up header was gobbled up.

Simone Zaza struck the last kick of the half into the side-netting from a tight angle. Valencia CF had their noses in front at the interval, thanks to Rodrigo’s opening goal.

Valencia CF were off to a slow start in the second half, which saw former Valencia CF man Ever Banega try his luck, but Neto claimed his long-range in the air at the second attempt. The game opened up and both sides provided much more in the way of a threat than in the first half.

Neto produced a fine save from close range to deny a Lenglet effort, following a Sarabia free-kick delivery, scrambling the ball to safety. Minutes later, Sergio Rico made another smart save to deny Rodrigo from grabbing his second goal.

Kondogbia slid a delightful through ball in behind the Sevilla FC backline, picking out Rodrigo’s run who slotted the ball past Sergio Rico and into the bottom right corner on 68 minutes. Not only did his goal double Marcelino’s side advantage, but he became Valencia CF’s leading league goalscorer on twelve goals so far this season.

The home side made two further attacking substitutions, as an attempt to get something out of the game, but it was to no avail. Marcelino brought on  Ferran Torres for Valencia CF's assist provider, Kondogbia, and a like-for-like swap was made in the closing minutes as Lato replaced a struggling Gayà with five minutes of normal time left to play.

Valencia CF registered a comfortable 2-0 win away at Sevilla FC, ending their barren run at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan which stretched back over a decade. Marcelino’s side will next host Deportivo Alavés on Friday 17th, during the height of the regional Fallas festivities at Mestalla (16:15CET).
