Valencia CF deserved much more than a draw against Celta at Balaídos (1-1)

Abril, 21 2018 -

Goalkeeper Sergio Álvarez was the key man, denying a VCF who created plenty of chances

Valencia CF did more than enough to win at Balaídos, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo on matchday 34 in LaLiga. Nonetheless, it's another important step towards Champions League qualification. Marcelino’s VCF were much the better team, creating plenty of chances, and Santi Mina opened the scoring in the second half, before a Maxi Gómez equaliser. The result leaves Valencia on 66 points, 11 clear of fifth-placed Betis, who play on Sunday night.

Coach Marcelino García Toral made eight changes to the team beaten by Getafe in midweek, with only Ezequiel Garay, Andreas Pereira and Gonçalo Guedes keeping their places. As for Celta Vigo, they were without talismanic striker and top scorer Iago Aspas, absent through injury, but feature Maxi Gómez, who has 13 LaLiga goals this campaign.

It was a quiet start to the game at Balaidos, the first half chance falling to the hosts with 6 minutes gone. Sisto’s cross found Wass at the far post and his glancing header flashed wide. On 16 minutes, the same player was involved in a Celta penalty appeal. He went down under Toni Lato’s challenge, but referee Fernández Borbalan waved away the appeals. Then, Celta were forced into an early reshuffle with just 20 minutes gone, the injured Roncaglia being replaced by Andreu Fontàs.

Valencia’s first chance came in the 23rd minute. Santi Mina danced into the box before unleashing a shot blocked by the sliding defender. VCF were growing into the game, and Gonçalo Guedes was testing the Celta right-back Hugo Mallo with his running. It was Guedes who found Andreas in space inside the box after 28 minutes, and his shot was well saved by Sergio Álvarez. By now, Valencia were absolutely on top, with Celta looking vulnerable. Guedes again threatened four minutes later, his curling shot going close to the top corner.

Carlos Soler, who was enjoying playing in a central midfield role in the absence of the suspended Dani Parejo, started the second half by testing the Celta keeper with a low shot when the ball broke to him on the edge of the box within 90 seconds of the restart. There was a real buzz to VCF’s attacking play, with Rodrigo setting up Guedes to sting the palms of Sergio Álvarez in the 50th minute. Marcelino’s side looked like they were inching ever closer to opening the scoring.

Then, just before the hour mark, the goal finally did come. Gonçalo Guedes played in Santi Mina and he thrashed an unstoppable shot past the keeper. It was his 12th league goal of the season. In a classy touch, the Galician striker didn’t celebrate the strike against his former club. It looked like Valencia CF were heading for all three points, but five minutes later, Uruguayan striker Maxi Gómez made it 1-1 with a well-taken header. What followed was a frantic last 25 minutes as Valencia threatened the Celta goal again and again.

On 81 minutes, the visitors were denied first by Sergio Álvarez, who saved Vezo’s header, and then by Hernández’s block on Kondogbia’s shot. Then five minutes later, young substitute Ferran Torres had a super chance to snatch the three points, but was denied again by the Celta goalkeeper. And in the 89th minute, Carlos Soler skewed a shot just wide when picked out in the box.

Somehow, it finished 1-1. Another valuable point on the road to Champions League qualification. Next for Marcelino’s Valencia CF: hosting Eibar at Mestalla next Sunday.
