Valencia CF lose to Villarreal with their Champions League spot already assured (1-0)

Mayo, 05 2018 -

Marcelino’s team lost to a last-gasp winner after they had chances to win

Valencia CF have achieved the objective they’ve been chasing in recent weeks. They’ll be in the Champions League next season, despite a loss to Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica 1-0. It was a game they didn’t need to win, but fought for the victory nonetheless, until Mario Gaspar’s last-gasp winner. Regardless, this Valencia CF team deserve huge credit after an unforgettable season, crowned with the return to Europe’s premier competition.

A club that has a grand domestic and European history will be back in the Champions League 2018/19, a deserved destination for many reasons: the magnificent fans, a squad who have shown character and a winning mentality, and a coaching staff who have brought confidence and excitement back. This project, which quietly began last summer, has already achieved something extraordinary: good football, impressive results, a connection between the team and the stands and a return to the values that this club holds dear. All thanks to a squad and coaching staff who have given absolutely everything.

Marcelino García Toral picked a strong team for the derby, making just the one change to the team that drew with Eibar at Mestalla last weekend, with Ezequiel Garay returning to replace Martín Montoya, and Rubén Vezo switching to full-back. As for Villarreal CF, they featured 15-goal topscorer Carlos Bacca as a lone centre-forward. The game started at a good pace, with Villarreal’s threat largely coming from pacey widemen Samu Castillejo and Denis Cheryshev, both of whom went close in the opening fifteen minutes.

As the first half went on, Sergio Asenjo was much the busier goalkeeper. In the 25th minute, Santi Mina and Rodrigo combined, but the latter was denied by the Villarreal number one. Then on 28 minutes, Santi Mina beat the Villarreal high line, before Asenjo made another good save. With five minutes to go until half-time, a late rally saw Villarreal twice go close to taking the lead. First a super piece of defending from Gabriel Paulista saw the Brazilian centre-back slide in to clear Cheryshev’s cross. Then Neto was called into action to push Carlos Bacca’s powerful shot over the bar after Garay’s slip.

The second half couldn’t maintain that frantic pace. There was time for Neto to come to the rescue again, as the Brazilian brilliantly pushed wide Castillejo’s deflected shot in the 54th minute. Marcelino looked to give his side a boost with the introduction of first Luciano Vietto for Santi Mina, and then Ferran Torres for Carlos Soler. However it was the home side who managed to grab a late winner, with Mario Gaspar’s near-post header from Manu Trigueros’ free kick in the 87th minute. Captain Dani Parejo had a late chance to level with a free kick just outside the box in added time, but couldn’t keep his effort down.

In truth, the result was secondary on a day that saw Valencia CF back where they belong, among the European elite, and they remain eight points ahead of fifth-placed Betis, and ten points ahead of Villarreal. It has been a truly memorable season for Marcelino’s team, and while the campaign draws to a close, this is just the beginning of the story.
