Goals from Zaza and Guedes close a great campaign in front of the home fans

Valencia CF ended a triumphant 2017/18 that saw the club return to Europe’s elite with a 2-1 win over Deportivo La Coruña on LaLiga’s matchday 38. It was a joyous, sunny Sunday afternoon at Mestalla in which the team showed off their new away kit for next season as players and fans had the chance to celebrate the conclusion of a historic campaign. Simone Zaza scored in the first half, and Gonçalo Guedes in the second, while VCF also hit the woodwork twice, and Jaume Domenech made some smart saves late on.

Marcelino García Toral picked a strong team for the final game of the season. Jaume continued in goal having captained the side last week, while youth product Nacho Vidal got a chance to impress at full-back, Maksimovic partnered Dani Parejo in midfield and Zaza, called up by Italy this week, joined Rodrigo Moreno in attack. As for Depor, their side included on-loan VCF winger Zakaria Bakkali, allowed to feature against his parent club.

Valencia CF started well, looking to reward the fans who had once again packed Mestalla. The home side’s first effort came 6 minutes in, captain Dani Parejo shooting low and wide from just outside the box. Zaza opened the scoring just inside the half-hour mark. It was a striker’s finish, taking advantage of the space afforded him by the Depor defence at the far post, finishing low and left-footed into the bottom corner. It means a total of 13 league goals this season, his best ever top-flight campaign.

As the first half drew to a close, a sharp-looking Rodrigo Moreno – who will be looking to continue his fine form in the World Cup in Russia over the summer – went close. Then, within seconds of the restart after the interval, Dani Parejo could have made it 2-0. The VCF captain drilled the ball just wide of goal when picked out in space on the edge of the area before Depor had the chance to get going. Valencia went even closer on 54 minutes when Maksimovic hit the bar with a header from a corner.

Dani Parejo, who had impressed in the final game of an exceptional season, was withdrawn after an hour to a huge standing ovation from the Valencia crowd, replaced by Geoffrey Kondogbia. VCF hit the woodwork again on 63 minutes, and this time it was Simone Zaza looking to get his second. His header from a difficult angle had Koval beaten in the Depor goal, but rattled the crossbar. It was the Italian’s last action of the game before being substituted for Santi Mina.

Rodrigo Moreno was next to receive the applause of the Mestalla crowd, brought off for Luciano Vietto to bring an end to his best-ever season, one that has seen him grab 16 league goals and a place in the Spain squad. Gonçalo Guedes then went close to doubling VCF’s lead on 71 minutes. Koval’s throw went straight to the Portuguese winger, who quickly set himself and went for goal from distance, only for the Ukrainian keeper to redeem himself with an acrobatic save.

There was nothing Koval could do about Valencia’s second goal though – and again it was Guedes, rounding off an outstanding debut season with a marvellous toe-poked finish in the 77th minute after Vietto’s backheel flick. Within seconds however, Lucas Pérez had pulled a goal back for Depor, and minutes later Jaume was called into action, making an important double save. Jaume was involved again on 86 minutes. Wearing the armband since Parejo’s substitution, the stopper led by example, making an excellent close-range save, sticking out a foot to preserve VCF’s lead.

At the final whistle, the Mestalla crowd rose to its feet to salute Marcelino, his staff and squad for a sensational season as the players went to share the moment with the fans. There’s so much to look forward to in 2018/19.
