Werder Bremen, penultimate test before the league season kicks off

Valencia CF meet Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion on Saturday, 5th of August (6pm kick-off) as they head into the home straight of the pre-season. The match will be broadcast live on BeIN LaLiga.

The team

SV Werder Bremen are a classic German club who were founded in 1899, their Green and White kit is instantly recognisable. They’ve won the Bundesliga four times, most recently in 2008/09, and they’ve also won the German Cup six times, second only to Bayern Munich. The last trophy Werder Bremen picked up was the German Super Cup in 2009. They also did the League and Cup double in 2004, the same season in which VCF did the League and UEFA Cup double.

In terms of European competition, their finest moment was the Cup Winners’ Cup victory in 1992. We’ve played Werder Bremen a total of eight times, with one win, five draws and two defeats. No VCF fan will ever forget that crazy 4 - 4 draw in the Europa League in 2010, when David Villa bagged a hat-trick to add to Juan Mata’s goal. The last time the two teams faced each other was in the 2015 pre-season, a game which ended in a goalless draw. Last season Werder Bremen finished eighth in the Bundesliga.

The stadium

The match will be played at the Weserstadion, which was built in 1909. It has a 42,358 capacity and has recently been fully redeveloped, making it one of the most modern grounds on the continent, including a huge solar panel system on the roof which generates 840,000kW/h of electricity per year.

The city

Bremen is in the north east of Germany and has a population of close to 550,000 inhabitants. Bremen is a hugely important industrial centre in the European Union and its port is the second most important in Germany.
