October, 24 2017 -

The goals from Rodrigo and Parejo sealed the tie

Valencia CF kicked off their Copa del Rey campaign against Real Zaragoza at La Romareda at 8.30 pm kick off. The game saw a cagey start in the opening minutes with neither side making any inroads into the game. Valencia CF grew into the game dominating possession as the minutes went by.

The first meaningful chance for Valencia CF fell to Nacho Gil on 25 minutes following a great Mina backheeled lay-off into Nacho Gil who fired over. Four minutes later, Orellana tried his luck but it was blocked away by the Zaragoza backline.

The first meaningful chance fell to former Valencia CF player Vinicius Araujo, who fired into the side-netting on 36 minutes. Four minutes later, Orellana enjoyed the best chance of the first half with a long-range shot which was pushed away by the keeper in the closing minutes of the first half.

The scoreline remained unchanged and it finished scoreless at the break.

Valencia CF came out in the second half knocking the ball about trying to open up the opposition defence in the opening minutes of the second half with Real Zaragoza showing their stalls in defence as Valencia were pushing and applying pressure on the opposition.

Zaragoza almost gifted Valencia the opener following a miskicked back pass from Papu.
The first chance in the second half came through an Orellana long-range shot who blasted it over the bar. Real Zaragoza responded a minute later with a counterattack at the other end, which was almost finished off by Papu.

Marcelino shuffled the pack deep into the second half and impact substitute Rodrigo broke the deadlock with ten minutes of normal time left to play following a delightful Parejo delivery from a corner kick which was headed across the keeper from close range to put Valencia CF in front.

Nacho Gil was brought down in the box by Dalmián and Valencia CF captain scored the resulting spot-kick with composure thwarting the keeper deep into stoppage time. Valencia showed their mettle in the Copa del Rey.
