Santi Mina:“Getting off the mark against Malaga CF gave me a lot of confidence”

Valencia CF forward Santiago Mina ran the rule over the squad on VCF radio during the international break and ahead of their upcoming LaLiga meeting away at Espanyol.

“He’s motivated me a lot from the very first day, keeping an eye on me on the non-sporting side as well. We’ve got a mutual respect for each other. He’s always been straightforward with me and I think that’s the way forward saying things straight up to the face both the good and the bad which has ultimately been something really important for me.

The feeling you get when coming here day by day, it’s an immense surge of joy seeing all the teammates, the togetherness within the squad… I’m not saying we didn’t have it in previous years.  This year is just different, there’s much more joy. There are really good vibes between ourselves at lunch and dinner which I think it’s shining through on the pitch.

I’ve seen the positive and negative side at Valencia CF but that has helped me grow and get to know what football is really all about. I’ve got to learn from the positive and negative things, making the most of every minute the gaffer gives me. We all want to play but we’ve got to show it on the pitch with every single minute that each and every one of us has got on the pitch.

I’m featuring fewer minutes on the pitch lately but when I come on I try to do my best to help out, providing assists, putting a massive shift in and scoring goals so that we aren’t feeling that hurried in the final minutes.

The football is pretty much in our heads, the confidence we’re all having from the first day the work, the sense of excitement and the values we’ve instilled amongst ourselves as a group, I think is fundamental. When my two teammates up front score I get really happy for them.

We all have the same aim which is finishing as high up the table as possible because we’ve been through really tough times over the last two seasons and  I think we all have to pull together regardless of who scores. We’ve got to be happy so that our families and the fans are happy too so that we all go home feeling happy which I think is fundamental.

I sort of offloaded a big burden after all the rumours and speculation. Getting off the mark against Malaga gave me a lot of confidence which is why I’m on four goals this season. After the  game against Malaga a friend came over and said to me that  I was going  to score and if you do so, you’ve got to make a special celebration because  I’m going to be in the stands and that’s my signature celebration and I always do it now.

Seeing ourselves up there, second–placed, four points behind the leaders. I heard the other day that with the points we’ve got at the moment two years ago now we would be the leaders, you can imagine the existing competition in the world’s best league, seeing ourselves second-placed is an honour".
