Marcelino:"Espanyol will force us to compete at the highest level”

Marcelino spoke to the media in today’s press conference where he highlighted the importance of the next match against RCD Espanyol for his team.

How is Zaza and what was the issue with his knee?

For some time now Zaza has a partial tear of the external meniscus, in this period he has experienced moments of discomfort that last for a short space, experiencing acute pain at the time but soon after can return to train normally. What can happen here? That period of discomfort could be longer, there could be a risk of greater injury or surgery may be needed. We feel he can play on Sunday, we believe that he is fit and he’s trained normally, without any kind of problem.

How do you see the game panning out?

It will certainly be complicated as Espanyol are a competitive and very well organized team and in Quique S. Flores they have an excellent coach. All his teams have a clearly defined style, which regroup quickly and are fast at breaking forward... we will have to be very careful. He also has good players on an individual level, with the likes of Leo Baptistao and Gerard Moreno able to do damage with their speed and shooting prowess. They have a well-balanced midfield and are disciplined, not dissimilar to ourselves. It will be a tight and competitive match.

Does Zaza carrying 4 cards condition your game plan?

Zaza has played in several games with four yellow cards and has played perfectly, without the matter inhibiting his style of play, so I don’t seeing it as being an impediment that would see him not playing.

Are you worried about people talking more about next week’s Barça match rather this weekend’s game against Espanyol? Do you look at the results of your rivals?

I would be lying if I said that we do not look at what our rivals are doing, we all look at the league table and study other games. We are all looking for the same objective and this is secured by winning and our rivals failing to do so. The squad certainly won’t be distracted by the fact that the next home match is FC Barcelona, because it will be more beneficial for us and for the fans going into the Barça game on the back of a win against RCD Espanyol. We are focused on winning another match this weekend and we know it will be no easy task.

There is only so much improvement a team who has won seven consecutive games can attain, however the team has failed to manage not conceding away from home, is that a goal?

It would be great if this weekend was the first game away from home that we do concede, so far we have not been able to finish with a clean sheet away from home and it is an objective that we have to work on short term and this and this starts with the next game.
