Valencia CF more than capable of keeping Barcelona quiet

An organised defence proved key at Mestalla

It isn’t easy to play FC Barcelona at the moment. Under the guidance of Ernesto Valverde, they have put together a fantastic start to the season, amassing 11 wins and two draws, but Valencia stood their ground on Sunday evening. The feeling in the dressing room was that the point they managed to take at Mestalla was richly deserved, after both the players and the technical staff saw room for improvement at the half-time break. Only four teams have allowed Barcelona less shots on goal in their opening 13 league clashes than Valencia managed to.

Against an opponent with such firepower, Marcelino’s side stuck together well and stayed organised at the back, refusing to surrender Barcelona any chances to try their luck without being put under pressure. The majority of their attempts were from range, with only four LaLiga teams restricting the Blaugrana to less shots than Valencia managed to. The hosts set out to frustrate Barca’s powerful attacking options, and they bested all but Las Palmas (5 shots), Levante (9 shots) and Malaga (11 shots).

When Marcelino got in touch with his players to tell them how pleased he was with the draw, it was clear that a great second-half performance could have seen Valencia take three points. But, that being said, Valverde’s men have only dropped points against Atletico Madrid so far this season. The rest of their games ended in victory.
