Marcelino: "I am very proud and pleased with this great squad"

Marcelino looked very pleased after Valencia CF’s Copa del Rey knock-out win against Real Zaragoza.

“You can take some positives from the game, but what is more important is that after a long time, we have seen Rober return and score a goal at Mestalla. He is a young player that had the misfortune to suffer a serious injury, he needed two operations, and I know that he has worked from July both day and night. I am happy for him, as he has received the fruits of his labour after suffering so much. Also, I’ve seen competitive players who want to win games.”

Regarding the decision to start with Simone Zaza, “it was a technical decision, a physical one and also one made in agreement. The injury has been dragging on for a while and he can aggravate it just be walking up the stairs, not just playing football. He competed well and we decided that he would play the whole game today and we were very happy with his performance. Simone will have his operation when the doctor decides, I’m not going to tell him when.”

When speaking on the topic of the good work of the unit, Marcelino pointed out that “our belief is to always compete, we should do it and we can demand it. We want to have ambition, we have all of the means to win games and the players intend to do just that. I don’t care who we play, we have to always be competitive and ambitious. The squad deserve a lot of credit for what they are doing. We are very proud and grateful of this fantastic squad’s efforts. Every time it is more difficult for me to choose who plays, game after game."

“We have a young squad, but this is partnered with experience. The game and the knock-out stages made this team a possibility in the end. These players have to have a chance.

With regard to the next opponent they will face, Marcelino has it very clear that he doesn’t have a preference. “Whoever we face, we will have to compete. It doesn’t matter who, because with this team and these fans everything is easier. I am thankful for their support and the large amount of people that came to Mestalla on such a cold night. This support is very important for us,” he said.
