Aside from the issues with the playing surface, Getafe didn’t want the ball and committed 18 fouls

Valencia CF enjoyed the most possession they’ve had in any LaLiga game this season

Valencia CF didn’t have the ideal pitch to play the football on which they had intended, but while it wasn’t a big enough excuse to justify losing against Getafe CF on Sunday, it certainly didn’t help Dani Parejo and company to look after the ball. Ruben Uria’s side enjoyed 67.6% of the ball across the 90 minutes at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, with their highest possession percentage of the season curiously coinciding with their first defeat of the 2017/2018 campaign.

Up until match day 14, Valencia had enjoyed their previous best possession statistics in match day 11 versus Leganés in Mestalla. In that game, they enjoyed 58% of the ball. While it isn’t a figure that Marcelino considers to be vital to winning games, it helps to give a better picture of this weekend’s defeat.

Getafe CF have committed the most fouls in LaLiga

One of the factors that surprised Ruben Uria during Sunday's match was how rough and physical it was. Valencia CF faced up against the team that had committed the most fouls in the division heading into this weekend, with Getafe having 231 to their name. Marcelino’s men, in contrast, have committed 188. When the two clashed at Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, the hosts added another 18 to their tally, although they managed a huge 23 versus Real Madrid earlier in the campaign.
